  • What is FundMe?

FundMe empowers you to crowdfund any project that is important to you.

FundMe provides an easy self serve fundraising platform that enables you to create a project online so you can reach out for support from people anywhere and everywhere.

  • How does Crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding is a way to raise funds for a project by asking a large number of people (the Crowd) to donate small amounts of money.

  • Who is the Crowd?

More often than not, the Crowd is people you already know: family, friends, coworkers, and friends of your friends. Sure, sometimes someone will stumble on your project and contribute, but most of your money will come from people who already know you in some way.

  • What types of projects are accepted?

We accept all projects for personal needs, new business ideas, expansion capital and anything that is not in violation of our terms and conditions.

  • Who can create a crowdfunding project?

Anyone who has a Social Security Number and US Billing address

Currently we are only integrated with WePay.com to process pledges made to your project. At this time, WePay.com can only supports US-based users. You need to have a social security number and US billing address in order to get money out of WePay. If you are in the US, you can collect money from people using international credit cards. WePay.com do have plans to be international one day, but doesn't have an exact timeline yet.

    http://https//support.wepay.com/hc/en-us/articles/203609583-Can-I-use-WePay-if-I-m-not-from-the-US-

  • Can people outside the US use FundMe?

For Project Owners: Project owners must have a Social Security Number and US Billing address.

For Contributors: Anyone with a valid credit card, bank account, or WePay account can make a financial contribution to a project on FundMe regardless of where they're located.

  • How much does it cost to use FundMe?

For Project Owners: It doesn’t cost anything to start a project on FundMe. When the project is complete, FundMe charges a 5% fee on the total amount of money that has been raised. In addition, our payment-processing partner, WePay.com, charge 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation. Expect to have about 8% of the money donated go towards fees, but again, it costs nothing to join and start your project.

For Contributors: Nothing. You can make a contribution to the project of your choice without paying any fees.

  • Does FundMe review projects before they’re approved to raise money?

Yes. We check to see that your project has all the important details your prospective funders need to know before we give you the green light to start crowdfunding.

  • What is FundMe’s role in project and campaign outcomes?

FundMe puts you in charge of promoting your project as you see fit. FundMe provides several tools to help promote your project on several social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn, stumbleupon, reddit, and tumblr but FundMe does not force you to use them.

BUT, we highly recommend it. The more people that see your project the more likely your project will get funded. So take advantage of the tools, promote your project, spread the word and tell everyone you know about your project.

  • How do I get my project to go viral?

Imagine you tell 2 people about your project and those 2 people tell 2 more people about your project…and then those 2 people tell 2 more people about your project. Before you know it, several hundred possibly thousands of people have seen your project. Remember: The more people that see your project the more likely your project will get funded.

So when you reach out for support, not only ask for contributions but it is just as important to ask those to spread the word about your project. Anyone, not just project owners, can promote a project through social media.

  • How do I promote my/a project?

Anyone can promote a project through social media. Just above the project description you will see several icons each icon represents the following social media network: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn, stumbleupon, reddit, and tumblr. Click the icon you want to promote the project through and follow the prompts.

For example, the first icon, the dark blue square with a lower case f, represents Facebook. Click the icon and follow the prompts. This will post the project on your Facebook page.

  • Who makes a good crowdfunder?

The ideal crowdfunder is someone who is passionate about his or her project, outgoing, hardworking, and well networked.

  • What is a Flexible Funding project?

FundMe only supports the Flexible Funding method for crowdfunding. This means that all projects will receive all the approved money (less fees) that has been pledged even if the project has not reached its original funding goal.

  • What makes a crowdfunding project successful?

Successful crowdfunding takes courage, determination, and a fair amount of hard work. You’ll need to be ready to accept the role of fundraiser, directly asking as many people as you can for money and help spreading the word - and that’s not the easiest thing to do. You’ll also need to see your crowdfunding project through from beginning to end. That could be a few months of steady effort. The basic equation for success is this:

    A Meaningful Project
    + A Supportive Network
    + Your motivation
= Your Best Chance at Success!

See the "Project Tips and Tutorials" section of this website for more details. You'll find information to help with your video, rewards, project description, and funding target calculations.

  • What happens once my project is created?

After you have finished creating your project page (image/video, description, funding target, etc.), you need to create and connect your project to a WePay.com account. WePay.com is our payment-processing partner. Once your project is connected to WePay.com, it is ready to accept pledges. Then finally, submit your project for review by using the "Submit for Review" button on your project page.

Once we've reviewed and approved your project, you will receive an approval email stating your project is now live on the site.

  • Do I have to create my project completely in one sitting?

No, most people prefer to take their time and build the project page. You can save your project page and come back to it later as many times as you'd like. However, you will need to include an image or video and fill in the areas with an asterisk (*) next to them to save. These areas are required, but you can always go back and revise those details later.

  • Are the funds I raise via FundMe taxed?

First, please note that FundMe cannot give tax advice, but we can give you some basic information to get the conversation started with your accountant or tax advisor. This information cannot be used to avoid tax-related penalties under the US Internal Revenue Code or to recommend or promote tax related matters to others.

Our payment-processing partner, WePay.com, has provided the following information about tax reporting

‘Using WePay does not necessarily affect your taxes. WePay helps you organize your payments and under certain circumstances will issue you Form 1099-K, a requirement from the IRS.
What is Form 1099-K and what does it contain?
Form 1099-K is the IRS’s information return for reporting the movement of funds. It reflects the gross dollar amount that you collected in the previous calendar year. In addition, the IRS 1099-K form should reflect your legal name and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). It is up to you (and your tax professional) to determine whether these amounts represent taxable income.
When will WePay send me the form?
If you collect at least $20,000 and have at least 200 transactions in the calendar year, WePay will send you the 1099-K form by January 31 of the following year. All payment processors are required to issue the 1099-K form by law. WePay is also required to file a corresponding tax form with the IRS, which participates in a combined filing program with many state tax agencies.’

  • Can I exceed my original funding target?

Yes! If your project reaches its target with time to spare in the crowdfunding period, keep going! As things come together for you in the right way, you may end up raising more money than you expected.

  • Are project videos required?

No, but projects with videos raise more than twice as much as those without, so consider a brief (2-3 minutes) video to give yourself the best shot at reaching your goal. A video helps potential supporters make an emotional connection to what you’re doing and makes them more likely to donate. The video can be very simple. It can even be a slideshow, but having one will really influence how the crowd reacts to your project.

Visit the "Project Tips and Tutorials" section to learn more about creating a video or slideshow.

  • What happens if I don’t reach my funding target?

FundMe only supports the Flexible Funding method for crowdfunding, you’ll receive all of the approved funds contributed (less fees).

  • How should I promote my project?

Besides using your FundMe project page to get the word out to supporters there are many other possible ways to promote your project online, through social media, and via traditional means like newspapers or events. Take a good look at the "Project Tips and Tutorials" section of this website for specific suggestions.

FundMe provides several tools to help promote your project on several social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn, stumbleupon, reddit, and tumblr.

Remember The more people that see your project the more likely your project will get funded. So take advantage of the tools, promote your project, spread the word and tell everyone you know about your project.

Email your family and friends ask them to not only contribute but to spread the word about your project. Anyone, not just project owners, can promote a project through social media.

The most important thing to remember about promotion is to do it often and early. It's a busy, noisy world out there so sending just a couple messages about your project probably won't cut it. Now is not the time to be shy! Tell as many people as you can about your project and tell them often! Gather your closest supporters, even before you launch your project, and have them prepare to give on the first day!

  • How do I update all of my supports?

You can update all of your supports by clicking on the Update(s) tab at the top of your project page, then click the 'Post a New Update' button. In addition to your new update being displayed on the Update tab, all current project supporters will receive an email update when you create a new post

  • How do I view my supporters?

You can view your supporters by clicking on the Supporters tab at the top of your project page, then scroll to the bottom of the page where you will find pagination. Click through the various pages to see all your supporters

  • My project reached its deadline for fundraising. What happens now?

First of all, take the time to thank your supporters. Without them, none of this would be possible. There are 2 ways to thank your supporters.

The first way is to send a mass email to all supporters using the ‘Update’ feature. Click the update tab on your project page then click post update button. The second way is to send each supporter a personal email. Click the Manage tab on your project page and scroll to the bottom of the page then click the Send Message link at the end of the supporters details.

Secondly, please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that rewards (if they were a part of your project) are fulfilled following the end of the crowdfunding period.

And finally, if you didn’t set up automatic withdrawals in your WePay.com account, login to https://www.wepay.com/login and request your last withdrawal. Here are some helpful links from WePay.com
